Jul 2008 - Eastern Beaches Crime Prevention advice to UNSW Community
Robbers look for easy targets. Follow these simple hints to make yourself a less attractive traget and reduce your chances of being robbed.
PERSONAL SAFETY TIPS FOR STUDENTS
- Be alert, Assertive and Confident – Utilise the security services that are
available at the university.
- Try and walk with other people rather than by yourself.
- At night stay in well lit areas, where there are lots of people. If this is not
possible DO NOT WALK THE STREETS AT NIGHT!
- Carry only the money you need for the day. Try to avoid carrying other
expensive items around such as laptops and Digital cameras.
- Keep your money and wallet in your front pocket and keep your bag in front
of you.
- Be aware of your surroundings, avoid long conversations on your mobile or
SMS while walking. Don’t walk around with your ear phones in your ears
with music blaring; you make yourself an easy target!
- If you feel like you are being followed or threatened, cross the street,
change direction, vary your pace and enter a shop or occupied house.
